One of the ways they fund UN initiatives is through the Action for Adolescent Girls initiative in Guatemala and India, run by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA). The goal of the initiative is to protect adolescent girls’ rights and empower the hardest-to-reach girls by focusing on building life-skills, delaying marriage and having children when they are ready.

Goals of the program include:

  • Offering youth-friendly health information
  • Providing health visits at local medical centers
  • Creating safe spaces for girls to meet and learn from one another
  • Helping girls receive official identification
  • Connecting girls with mentors
  • Training basic life skills to help girls earn an income
  • Supporting enrollment in school
  • Empowering girls economically by offering financial literacy training and helping them open savings accounts

Girls are powerful. Girls have limitless potential. Girls can change the world. And yet in certain places around the world, girls continue to lack access to opportunities.

It’s wrong. It’s unjust. And, plain and simple, it’s not smart.

Girl Up provides financial and other support to the UN through joint UN programs in Ethiopia, Guatemala, Liberia, Malawi. and India. Since 2010, Girl Up has partnered with the United Nations to support programs that give girls an equal chance for education, health, social and economic opportunities, and a life free from violence.

When we set out to start Girl Up in 2010, we had one important mission: Unite girls to change the world. Five years later, it's incredible to see what we've accomplished for girls globally, and none of it would have been possible without your support. Just imagine what we can accomplish in 5 more, together.
